Objectives

The key objective of the Don’t Extradite the Basques Campaign group is to fight to prevent the extradition of Iñaki de Juana and Arturo ‘Beñat’ Villanueva to Spain.

We also aim to raise awareness about the political context of the extradition attempts – of attacks by the Spanish authorities on political and civil rights in the Basque Country and the broad repression against Basque cultural, community and political organisations.

The DETB campaign group was initiated by the Belfast Basque Solidarity Committee. Its first organising meeting was held on May 20, with the participation of 30 people from many different political and social backgrounds.

The campaign is open to all those who support the demands of the petition against the extraditions.

We support the fundamental human, civil and political rights of the Basque people as laid out in the UN Declaration of Human Rights.

We support the right of Iñaki de Juana and Arturo ‘Beñat’ Villanueva not to be persecuted by the Spanish government for their political ideas.

We call on the British government to immediately reject the extradition attempts and not to collaborate with the Spanish government’s political persecution of Iñaki de Juana and Arturo ‘Beñat’ Villanueva.

We support the right of Iñaki de Juana and Arturo ‘Beñat’ Villanueva to live freely in Ireland.
